Superior and Inferior
Top and Bottom
Proximal and Distal (Limbs)
- Proximal: structure is closer to the rest of the body
- Distal: structure is further away from the body
Anterior and Posterior
- Anterior: towards the front (ventral)
- Posterior: towards the back (dorsal)
- Ventral and dorsal used when discussing the nervous system
Superficial and Deep
- Superficial: on top
- Deep: is deep
Medial and Lateral
- toward the midline of the body and toward the outside
Right and left
Used when comparing 2 sides of the body
Ipsilateral and Contralateral
Ipsi: reside on same side of the body
Contra: reside on opposite sides of the body
- used when discussing things on the right side or the left side of body
