Muscles of the Upper Limb Flashcards
Upper Limb Musculature
Muscles must cross a joint to move that joint
Superficial Humeral Muscles
Attach to the humerus and produce the major movements of the shoulder
- Deltoid, pectoralis major, latissimus dorsi
Pectoralis Major
Adducts the glenohumeral joint
Latissimus Dorsi
Extension (rowing boat) and adducts the glenohumeral joint
Deltoid
Abduction of the glenohumeral joint and anterior/posterior heads can function along in flexion and extension of glenohumeral joints respectively
Scapular Muscles
Trapezius, pectoralis minor, serratus anterior, levator scapulae, rhomboids (major and minor)
Trapezius
Broad muscle attachment spanning from the head to the last thoracic vertebra, elevation/depression/retracting scapula, each laterally flexes neck (move head to ear)
Pectoralis Minor
Lies deep to the pectoralis major and depressses scapula
Serratus Anterior
Protracts the scapula (boxer’s muscle - extends reach of the arm)
Levator scapulae
Elevates the scapula
Rhomboids (major & minor)
Retract the scapula
Deep Humeral Muscles
Synergists to superficial muscles and provide additional movements to the glenohumeral joint (Rotator Cuff muscles, coracobrachialis, and teres major, supraspinatus, infraspinatus, teres minor)
Coracobrachialis
Adductor of the glenohumeral joint
Teres Major
Extensor of the glenohumeral joint that also internally rotates the joint
Rotator Cuff Muscles
Originate at the scapula and insert to the proximal humerus
(Supraspinatus, infraspinatus, teres minor - attach posteriorluy on scapula)
Subscapularis
Deep Humeral Muscles
Teres major, coracobrachialis, Supraspinatus, infraspinatus, teres minor, subscapularis
Teres Minor
External rotation of the glenohumeral joint
Supraspinatus
Abduction of the glenohumeral joint
Infraspinatus
External Rotation of the glenohumeral joint
Subscapularis
Internal rotation of the glenohumeral joint
Posterior Brachial Muscles
Triceps: extension of the elbow
Anconeus: Extension of the elbow
Anterior Brachial Muscles
Brachialis: flexion of the elbow
Biceps Brachii: flexion of the elbow
Posterior Antebrachial Muscles
Brachioradialis, extensor carpi radialis, extensor digitorum, extensor digiti minimi, extensor carpi ulnaris, supinator, extensor indicis, extensor pollicis)
Brachioradialis
Flexor of the elbow joint
Extensor carpi radialis (longus and brevis)
Extends the radial (lateral) sides of the wrist
Extensor digitorum
Extends digits 2-4
Extensor digiti minimi
extends digit V (drinking tea)
Extensor Carpi Ulnaris
Extends the ulnar (medial) side of the wrist
Supinator
Deeper layer than the other posterior antebrachial muscles.
Unwinds and externally rotates the radius = supination
Anterior Antebrachial Muscles
Flexor digitorum superficialis, pronator teres, flexor carpi radialis, palmaris longus, flexor carpi ulnaris, pronator quadratus, flexor digitorum profundus and flexor pollicis longus)
Flexor Digitorum Superficialis
Largest anterior antebrachial muscles, flat, sends tendons to phalanges for flexions
Pronator teres
Internally rotates the radius, pronation of the hand
Flexor Carpi Radialis
Flexes the radial (lateral) side of the wrist
Palmaris Longus
Attaches to a thick connective tissues of the hand (palmar aponeurosis)
Contraction of palmaris longus tenses the aponeurosis, flexes the wrist
Flexor Carpi Ulnaris
Flexes the ulnar (medial) side of the wrist
Pronator Quadratus
Assists the pronator teres in pronation of the hand
Flexor digitorum profundus
Flexes digits 2-5
Flexor pollicis longus
Flexes digit 1
Extensor Indicis
Extension of digit 2
Extensor pollicis (longus and brevis)
Extension of digit 1
Abductor Pollicis Longus
Abduction of digit 1
