Axial Musculature Flashcards
Muscles of the Back
Serratus Posterior Superior, Serratus Posterior Inferior, Epaxial - True Muscles (Erector spinae group-iliocostalis, longissimus, spinalis; splenius group),
Serratus Posterior Superior
- Intermediate Layer
- Elevates the ribs and increases thoracic volume for inspiration
Serratus Posterior Inferior
Depresses the ribs during expiration
Erector Spinae Group and Spleinus Group
- Epaxial Muscle, close to vertebral column
- Extensors of the vertebral column when bilateral and lateral flexors when unilateral
Erector Spinae Group
Lateral to Medial: Iliocostalis, longissimus, spinalis
- I like standing
Scalene Muscle
- Flexes the neck
- In the lateral neck
Longus Muscles (Colli & capitis)
Run along the anterior surface of the vertebrae
- Prevertebral and flex the neck
Infrahyoid muscles
Depress and stabilize the hyoid bone
External Intercostal Muscles
- Thorax (Ventilation of the lungs)
- Fascicles run in an inferior and medial direction (down and in)
- Elevate ribs = inspiration
External Oblique Muscles
- Abdomen
- Fascicles run in an inferior and medial direction
Internal Intercostal muscles
- Thorax (ventilation of the lungs)
- 90 degrees from the external muscles and fascicles run inferiorly and laterally (down and out)
- Depresses ribs = expiration
Internal Oblique muscles
- Abdomen
- 90 degrees from the external muscles and fascicles run inferiorly and laterally
Transversus Thoracis
- Thorax (ventilation of the lungs)
- Fan out in a variety of directions and the most inferior are nearly horizontal
- Depresses ribs = expiration
Transversus Abdominis
Fascicles travel in a horizontal plane
Diaphragm
Primary muscle for relaxed breathing
- Boundary between thoracic and abdominal cavities, contraction = inspiration
Psoas Major
Runs along the anterior surface of the vertebra (prevertebral)
- travels and joins with the iliacus
Flex the lumbar vertebrae and flex the hip
Quadratus Lumborum
Laterally flexes the lumbar vertebrae (spine)
Rectus Abdominis
Flexes the vertebral column
- Tendons seprarete muscle into bellies - 6 pack
Perineal Muscles
Make up the urogenital triangle b/w the rami of the pubic bones
-Sex and support floor of pelvis
- External anal sphincter: voluntary control of defacation
Pelvic Diaphragm
Bowl that cradles the pelvic viscera and support the otgans
- Contract when sneezing to prevent escape of pee or feces
Iliacus
Comes down form the pelvis and combine with psoas major and iliacus before the femur to turn into iliopsoas at femur
