Germany and Berlin divided into four zones.
Controlled by Americans, British, Soviets and French.

What was life like in Germany
Devastated after war
-Economic and social hardship.
What did the countries want for Germany?
-USSR demanded compensation from Germany.
They wanted a permanently weakened Germany that would not be a threat again
-Others wanted a strong prosperous and democratic Germany that would be an obstacle to communism.
What was introduced to help revive the economy? USSR reaction
Deutschmark- refused to allow currency to be used in their zone.
When did Berlin blockade begin, what happened.
24 June 1948- Soviets cut off all road, rail and canal links to West Berlin.
-Stalin hoped Allies would leave the city
What was the Berlin Airlift?
Code name Operation Vittles
-Cargo planes would fly into 3 airports in West Berlin bringing food, clothing, medical supplies and fuel for over 2.5 million people.
How long did airlifts continue?
Until April 1949
- Stalin realised he would not be able to drive the Allies out.
-Allies were able to deliver more supplies by air than by road and rail before the blockade.
