What was communism?
A political belief sources in Russia which meant the government controls all aspects of society.
Who was the tsar and when did he step down?
Tsar Nicholas II was forced to step down in February 1917
When were the tsar and his family executed?
Executed by the Bolsheviks in July 1918
What was Socialism in One Country?
The plan to strengthen communism in the USSR first and then spread it further to other countries
What was propaganda?
The distortion of information to communicate information that is often untruthful or inaccurate
Describe several uses of propaganda at this time
~Posters and works of art presented Russia successful and happy
~Textbooks were rewritten to make Stalin’s position in the October Revolution more impressive
~The Communist Party newspaper was called Pravda, meaning Truth, and in it they praised Stalin and criticised any rivals

~Textbooks rewritten
~Stalin made school compulsory and brought back exams, to combat illiteracy and improve efficiency in the workplace.
Describe a woman’s role during this time
~Stalin wanted birth rate to be high to build up workforce and army
~Parents received child allowance from state, but only if married
~Contraception illegal
~Divorce was discourages
~Rewards were given to women if they had six or more children
~Women were encouraged to join the workforce and made up nearly half of the USSR’s workforce
