誰可使為西河守者?

Who can be appointed to be the Protector of Xihe?’

咎犯對曰

Jiu Fan replied,

虞子羔可也

Answer 4

Yuzi Gao would do.’

公曰
非汝之讎也？

The Duke said,
Isn’t he your enemy?’

對曰
君問可為守者

Answer 6

Jiu Fan replied,
Your Lordship asked who would be able to serve as the Protector.

Question 7

非問臣之讎也

Answer 7

You did not ask who my enemies were.’

Question 8

羔見咎犯而謝之

Answer 8

When Gao met Jiu Fan, he thanked him,

薦之於君

Answer 9

and recommended me to his lordship

幸赦臣之過

saying
It is fortunate for me that you have pardoned my offense

so that I may serve as the Protector of Xihe.’

Recommending you was a public matter.

My grievance against you is a personal matter.

I never allow personal affairs to obstruct public deliberations.
