子墨子曰
Mozi said,
萬事莫貴於義
Of the multitude of things, none is more valuable than righteousness.
今謂人曰
予子冠履
而斷子之手足
Nowadays when we tell someone,
I shall give you a cap and shoes
but cut off your hands and feet.
子為之乎?
Would you agree to this?”
必不為
He would certainly not do this.
何故?
Why
則冠履不若手足之貴也
Because caps and shoes are not as valuable as hands and feet.
又曰
予子天下
而殺子之身
子為之乎?
Again, if we say,
We shall give you All-under-heaven
and kill you.
Would you agree to this?”
必不為
He would certainly not do this.
He would certainly not do this.
Why
則天下不若身之貴也
Because all-under-Heaven is not as valuable as your life.
爭一言以相殺
Yet people contend over a word and hence kill each other.
是貴義於其身也
This means righteousness is more valuable than one’s life.
故曰
This is why I say that
