That which the ruler has not eaten
王之所大欲
That which the king greatly desires
所明知者
Those that you clearly understand
其所惡者
‘Those which you hate’
人之所不學而能者
‘Those things people can do without studying’
事得其反
When someone devote themselves to something, they get the opposite effect.
欲治者必惡亂。亂者,治之反也。
Those who wish for a well-ordered state will certainly hate rebellion.
Rebellion is the opposite of order.
先王之愛民不過父母之愛子,
子未必不亂也。
The former king’s love towards the people does not exceed
the parents’ love towards their children. The children may
not necessarily not rebel.
舜人也。我亦人也。
Shun is a person. I am also a person.
不亦可乎
Is this not acceptable?
古之時與今之時同乎
Are ancient times the same as modern times?
三人相與友
The three people are friends with each other.
治國者之過也
This is the fault of those who govern the state.
孟子曰子過矣
Mencius said, ‘You are wrong.’
是何故也
What is the reason for this?
