Mencius said to King Xuan of Qi,

王之臣有託其妻子於其友
而之楚遊者

Suppose a subject of Your Majesty’s,
having entrusted his wife and children to the care of a friend,
were to go on a trip to Chu,

比其返也
則凍餒其妻子
如之何
A
Later on, upon his return,
he found out his friend had allowed his wife and children
to suffer cold and hunger.
Then what should he do about it?’

棄之
A
The King said,
He should cast him off.’

士師不能治士
則如之何？
A
Mencius said,
The Master of Gentry was unable to keep the gentry in order.
Then what should be done about it?’

已之
A
The King said,
Dismiss him.’

四境之內不治
則如之何？
A
Mencius said,
If the whole realm within the four borders was ill-governed,
then what should be done about it?’

The King looked to the right and left and changed the subject.
