Test Flashcards
What are tropic levels?
The levels of nourishment in a food chain. 90% heat transfer and 10% energy. Trophic means energy. (Producers->primary->secondary->tertiary)
What are the properties of life and how many are there?
1) Organization and cell
- atom to biological molecule to organelle to cell to tissue to organ to organ system to organism
2) response to stimuli
3) homeostasis
4) reproduction
5) growth and development
6) metabolism
7) adaptation(change through time)
What is a food web?
Many different food chains crossed to create a we which shows the transfer of energy from one organism to others
What is a food chain?
The chain of transfer of energy from one organism to another through feeding. Ex. Grass->cow->human
What is the scientific method and it’s steps ?
It is the process used to find answers to questions about the world around us.
1) OBSERVATION of the natural world
2) Formulate a QUESTION
3) Research and COLLECT DATA
4) state a HYPOTHESIS
5) EXPERIMENT TO TEST HYPOTHESIS
6) CONCLUSION from observations
7) COMMUNICATE RESULTS
What are the 3 themes of biology?
1) diversity&unity of life
2) interdependence of organisms
3) evolution of life(theory)
What are the levels of organization of multicellular organisms & levels or organization in an environment?
Atoms➡️biological molecules➡️organelle➡️Cell➡️Tissue➡️Organ➡️Organ system➡️Organism
(Smallest to biggest)
Organism➡️population➡️community➡️Ecosystem➡️Biosphere
What is a limiting factor?
Environmental factor that prevents an organism or population from reaching its full potential of distribution or activity (limits/controls population) example could be climate, supply of food
What is carrying capacity ?
The largest population that an environment can support @ any given time. It is shown in a logistic model graph. The birth rate equals the death rate and the growth stops when reaching it’s carrying capacity.
Biotic vs Abiotic
Abiotic- nonliving factor in an ecosystem ex. Moisture, sunlight. This is needed for survival
Biotic-living things in an ecosystem ex. Plants, animals, fungi, bacteria
What is a control and the different types of variables?
Control-a part of the experiment that is NOT being tested and is used for comparison
Variable-any part of an experiment that can change
Independent variable- part of experiment CHANGED by the scientist doing the experiment
Dependent variable- part of experiment that is AFFECTED by the independent variable
(It can be measured)
What is predation?
Organism that hunts another organism(prey) for energy(food)
What is competition ?
2 organisms trying to eat the same food
What is symbiosis ?
Relationship between 2 organisms of different species
Mutualism?
Both organisms benefit from the relationship
