Macromolecules Flashcards
Polymer
Monomers that bond to one another, a molecule that consists of repeated, linked units
Monomer
Carbon compounds built up from smaller, simpler molecules
Macromolecules
Large polymer (structure)
How do u know if a term is a sugar?
It has the suffix -ose
Organic compound
Compounds that contain both hydrogen & carbon atoms
Inorganic compounds
Compounds that DO NOT contain both hydrogen and carbon atoms
4 organic compounds
Carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, & nucleic acids
What are lipids?
Large nonpolar organic molecules Wax Fats Oils Steroids
What are carbohydrates?
Organic compounds composed of hydrogen carbon & oxygen
Monosaccharide, disaccharide , & polysaccharide
What are proteins?
Organic compounds composed of hydrogen oxygen nitrogen and carbon
Amino acids
Enzyme
What are nucleic acids?
Very large & complex organic molecules that store information from cells
DNA
RNA
Monosaccharide
Simple sugar, monomer of a carbohydrate
Disaccharide
Double sugar, 2 monosaccharides
Polysaccharide
Complex, made of many monosaccharides in carbohydrates
Amino acid
Proteins formed by the linkage of monomers ex. Hair, skin, muscle, hormones
Enzyme
RNA or any protein molecule that acts as biological catalysts, essential for a functioning cell
Wax
Type of structural lipid consisting of a long fatty acids chain joined a long alcohol chain, waterproof, protective layer
Steroids
Composed of 4 fused carbon rings, animal hormones, make testosterone, cholesterol
DNA
Deoxyribonucleic acid, contains information that determines characteristics in an organism
RNA
Ribonucleic acid stores information from DNA that is essential for manufacturing proteins
