Property Of Water Flashcards
Is water polar or nonpolar ?
Why?
Importance?
Polar
Unequal pull on shared electrons
Causes water molecule to attract by a hydrogen bond
Water is less or more dense as a solid? Importance ?
Less dense
Ice acts as an insulator to water below
Hydrogen bonds
Importance
Weaker than covalent bonds Except they’re stronger in H20. There is a very large amount of energy required to break
Causes: high specific heat
What does high specific heat do and what does it mean?
Importance ?
Absorb and release large amount of energy without a change in temp
Helps absorbs energy from chemical processes in cells
-regulate cell temp
-stabilize global temperature outside
Solvent
Homogeneous mix of substances made of solvent and solute
Molecules & ions must dissolve in water to be part of processes inside of cells
-marine organism
-plant nutrients
Cohesion
The force of attraction between molecules on the same substances
( from Hydrogen bonds makes the same molecules stick together )
Ex. Rain
Adhesion
The attraction of molecules of a different substance
Ex. Transpiration travels through roots and goes to leaves
Polar
Like dissolves like (polar molecules dissolve in water due to attraction of molecules)
Ex. Sugars & proteins in blood
Non-polar
No charge and not attracted to charged molecules
ex. Oil & water
Concentration
Specific amount of solute dissolving in a solvent
Solute
Substance dissolved in a solvent (like powder)
Solvent
Dissolves another substance and in greater amount (water)
