Periodic Table Flashcards
How is the table organized and what did it allow Mendeleev to do?
Was able to anticipate undiscovered elements & expected properties
Put elements in order of increasing atomic mass & organizes according to their properties
Created by?
Mendeleev
What’s the periodic law
That elements have patterns in their properties when they are placed in order by their atomic number
Ex. Atoms increase in radius as u go down a column
Period
Another name for a row on the periodic table
Group of family
Another name for a column on the periodic table
Valence electrons
Electrons farthest away from the nucleus. They determine the properties of the element and are involved in forming bonds
Valence electrons=the group #
How to make a Lewis for diagram?
Write symbol
Find # of valence electrons
Place for on each side then double up until the number of dots is equal to the number of valence electrons
Ion formation rule
If an element loses electrons it becomes positive
If an element gains electrons it becomes negative
What are the 3 classes of elements?
Metals, non metals, and metalloids
Properties of metals
Left & center of periodic table
Conduct heat & electricity well
Form positive ions
Malleable and ductile
Properties of non metals
Right side of the periodic table
Poor conductors of heat and electricity
Form negative ions
Brittle, some are gases
Metalloids have properties of what
Both classes & are located on both sides of the stair case
Where are lanthanides located
First period at the bottom
Where are actinides located ?
Second period at the bottom
