TDDS Flashcards
Transdermal Drug Delivery System is also known as
Patch or Transdermal Patches
Dosage form intended for delivering or passage of drug across skin to systemic absorption
Transdermal Drug Delivery System
TDDS is intended for drugs with ____ and _______
TDDS is intended for drugs with short biological half life and first pass effect
Two types of TDDSs
1. Monolithic Transdermal System
Incorporate a drug matrix layer between the backing & frontal layers
2. Membrane-controlled Transdermal System
Designed to contain a drug reservoir or pouch, usually in liquid or gel form, a rate-controlling membrane, & backing, adhesive & protecting layer
Parts of Transdermal Drugs
- Occlusive Backing Layer
- Drug Matrix System / Drug Reservoir
- Adhesive Layer
- Protective Strip / Release Liner
Prevents water loss and drug loss from matrix or reservour
Occlusive Backing Layer
Store & release the drug at the skin site.
Drug Reservoir / Drug Matrix System
Ensures drug contact and continued drug delivery
Adhesive layer
Removed before application & enables drug release
Release liner / Protective Strip
Considerations in TDDS Application
- Percutaneous absorption may vary with the site of application.
- TDDSs should be applied to clean, dry skin that is relatively free of hair and not oily, irritated, infl amed, broken, or callused.
- Use of skin lotion should be avoided
- TDDSs should not be physically altered by cutting.
- A TDDS should not tear or cut into the unit.
- A TDDS should be placed at a site that will not subject it to being rubbed off by clothing or movement
- A TDDS should be worn for the full period
- Cleanse the hands thoroughly before and after applying a TDDS.
- Seek reevaluation if sensitive.
- Upon removal, a used TDDS should be folded in half with the adhesive layer together so that it cannot be reused.
Principle of TDDS Administration
The basis for the development of transdermal drug delivery systems involves percutaneous absorption.
