Granules Flashcards
prepared agglomerates of powders
Granules
Pharmaceutical granules have a size range between
0.2 - 4 mm
1.Sieve Size: No. 4 – No. 12 (coarse to very coarse)
Advantages of Granulation
Prevent segregration or demixing of the consituents of the powder mix
Improve the flow properties of the mix
Improve compaction characteristics of the mix
more stable to humidity; more easily wetted by liquids
Methods of Granulation
Dry Granulation
Wet Granulation
Dry Granulation is also known as
Precompression
Double Compression
Used for drugs that do not compress well after wet granulations or those sensitive to heat and moisture
particles are aggregated using high pressure
Dry Granulation
A large tablet (Slugs) is produced which is broken via milling to produce granular materials.
Slugging / Rotary Compaction
The powder is squeezed between two rollers to produce a sheet of material
Roller Compaction / Ribbon Blending
Most widely used that involves massing of a mix of dry primary powder particles using a granulating fluid
Wet granulation
Liquid is sprayed on suspended powders
Fluid Bed Granulation
