synapses Flashcards
what is a synapse
junction between two neurones or a neuron and an effector
how does a synapse communicate
the pre synaptic neurone releases a neurotransmitter which diffuses and communicates with the post synaptic neurone causing an impulses
what does a synapse allong
a single to be transmitte dto a different number of neurones at a synapse
how is a response created
allows different impulses to be combined to produce a single response
what is step one
the synaptic knob is depolarised which causes the calcium ion to open causing calcium ions to flood in
what happens when the calcium ion flood in
neurotransmitters found in vescicles fuse with the pre synaptic membrane and then pinch off into the cleft
what do the neurotransmitter do
acetylcholine diffuses and bind to the sodium ion channels causing conformational change
what does this change cause
the influex of sodium ions to enter triggering depolarisation and an action potential
what does the enzym do
ache hydrolytic enzyme hydrolyses acetly choline into acetyl and choline
what does this do to the sodium ion channels
cause them to close
what happens to the acetyl and choline
they are reuptaken in the presynaptic neurone
what happens in the presynaptic neurone
atp is used to recombine them into acetly choline
