successon Flashcards
what does dynamic ecosystems m,ean
they change day to day as population fluctuate and sometimes very rapidly
what is succession
term used to describe the changes in an ecosystem over time in the species that occupy the area
what happens at each stage of a succession
new species colonise the area and these may change the environment
how do the new species affect the existing condition
they may outcompete ethe existing ones and take over a given area
this may amake it more suitable for species with different adaptiation
the change in abiotic factors mean what
lead to alteration which are less hostile to make it easier for certain organisms and species to survive so new communities are formed
what is the first stage of a succession
the colonisation of an inhospitable area these are called pioneer species
why are pioneer species special
they have feature that make them suited to hostile enviromet which include asexual reproduction production of many seeds rapid germination of seeds ability to photosynthesis tolerance to extreme conditims
where are lichens found and why are they special
they can survive oon bare ricjj and live without drying out
what happens overtime to the rockjs
they weather which produce sand and soil for the lichens, the lichen die and decompose releasing nutrients which support a community of plants
what has the lichens done
changed the abiotic environment which has allowed different species to survive
what happens overtime to the biotic and abiotic factors
becomes less hostile more rich in nutrients , more food webs and more stable communities- climax community
what is a climax community
final stage of sucession stable state of balanced equilibrium where many species flourish
what rae the main common features in a succession
the abiotic factors become less hostile
greater number of habits and niches
increase biodiversity which leads to increase food webs
what is the other type of succession and how does it occur
secondary when the land which already has life is cleared as a result of fires or grazing or disease
why is the climax community built rapidly in secondary succession
the soil already exists in which the spores and seeds often remain alive in the soil
