Structure and function of the brain Flashcards
1
Q
What is the brain responsible for?
A
- processing all the information collected by receptor cells about changes in the internal and external environment
- als receives and process information for the hormonal system through molecules in the blood
- it must then produce a coordinated response
2
Q
What is the advantage of having a central control centre for the whole body?
A
- communication between the billions of neurones involved is much faster than if control centres for different function were distributed around the body
- with the exception of relex actions, all other nervous reaction are processed by the brain
3
Q
What is the brain surrounded by?
A
- protected by the skull
- surrounded by protective membranes
- called meninges
4
Q
name the black tings
A
- skull
- cerebrum
- corpus callosum
- hypthalmus
- cerebellum
5
Q
name the red tings
A
- medulla oblongata
- spinal cord
- vertebra
- pituitary gland
6
Q
What is the function of the cerebrum?
A
- controls voluntary actions
- e.g. learning, memory, personality, and conscious thought
7
Q
What is the function of the cerebellum?
A
- controls unconscious functions
- such as posture, balance, and non-voluntary movement
8
Q
What is the medulla oblongata?
A
- used in autonomic control
- e.g. controls heart rate and breathing rate
9
Q
What is the hypothalmus?
A
- regulatory centre for temp and water balance
10
Q
What is the pituitary gland?
A
- stores and releases hormones that regulate many body functions
