Rooting powder and weedkillers Flashcards
1
Q
What are hormone rooting powders?
A
- contians auxin
- stimulates production of roots
- makes it easier to propagate new plants from plant cutting
2
Q
What is a cutting?
A
- small piece of plant stem, usually with leaves
- if placed in water or compost, roots may appear and a new plant forms
- if dipped in hormone rooting powder increases the chances of roots forming and of successful propagation
3
Q
Why are hormone rooting powder commerically important?
A
- easier to develop couttings to sell and for individuals taking their own cutting
4
Q
What is microprpagation?
A
- larged scale propagation
- thousands of new plants are grown from a few cells of the original plants
- plant hromones are essential
- control the production of the mass of new cell and then the differention of the clones into new plants
5
Q
What happens if the balance of plant growth hormones is lost?
A
- can interrupt metabolism of the whole plant and may lead to plant death
- sometimes this is important
6
Q
Why are weeds damaging in food production?
A
- commercial food crobs are vital globally
- weeds interfere
- competing for light, space, water, and minerals
7
Q
How do hormonal weedkillers work?
A
- main staple founds are mainly narrow leaved monocot plants
- most weeds are broad-leaved dicots
- if synthetic dicot auxins are applied as weedkiller, they are absorbed by the broad-leaved dicots and affect they metabolism
- growth rate increases and become unsustainable so they die
- narrow-leaved crops unaffected
8
Q
why are hormonal weed killers important??
A
- simple and cheap
- low toxicity to mammals
- selective
