Coordination Flashcards
Why is coordination necessary?
organisms need to coordinate the function of different cells and systems to operate effectively
few body systems can work in isolation
most stystem are interdependant, e.g. for a muscle to contract, muscle cells must constantyl respire, thus require a constant oxygen supply.
in plants - light-senstive chemicals enable plants to coordinate the development of flowerbuds with the lengthening days that signal the approach of spring and summer
What is homeostasis?
function of organs are coordinated in order to maintain a relatively constant internal environment
e.g. dugestuve organs such as the exocrine pancreasm duodenum and ileum along witht the endeocrine pancreas and the lvier work together to maintain a constant blood glucoise concentration
How does cell signalling occur?
one cell releasing a chemical which has an effect on another cell, this cell is called the target cell
]
this can transfer signals locally (e.g. neurones at synapses), or across large distanes (e.g. pituitary gland secrete ADH, which operates in the kidney)
How are plants coordinated?
through use of hormones
e.g. stems grow towards a light source to maximise their rate of photosynthesis
