reflexes part 3 Flashcards
1
Q
How is reaction time measured>
A
- when a person catches a falling object, part of this response is a reflex reaction
- measuring the time taken to catch a falling object can therefore be used to measure a person’s reaction time
2
Q
What is the method for measuirng reaction time?
A
- suitable scale placed onto the ruler
- which converts the distance dropped by the reular into a reaction time
*
- which converts the distance dropped by the reular into a reaction time
3
Q
Why are reflexes important?
A
- reflexes are essential as they avoid the body being harmed, or reduce to the severity of the damage
4
Q
How does the involuntary nature of reflexes increase your chance of survival?
A
- being involuntary
- decision-making regfions of the brain are not involved
- therefore the brain is able to deal with more complex responses
- prevents brain from being overloaded in situations which the response is always the same
5
Q
How are reflexes really fast? How does this increase our chances of survival?
A
- *
- extremely fast
- reflex arc is very short
- normallly only involves one or two synapes
- which are the slowest part of transmission
6
Q
What are the other ways reflexes incease are chances of survival?
A
- don’t have to be learnt
- present at birth
- therefore provide immediate protection
- have became everyday action
- such as those that keep us upright
- and those which control digestion
