Statistics:Descriptive and inferential Flashcards
What is an advantage of using the mean?
Takes all scores into account and most sensistive measure of central tendancy for all data
What is a disadvantage of using the mean?
Can be misleading/scewed by extreme values
What is an advantage of the median?
More useful measure than the mean where there are extreme values involved
What is a disadvantage of the mean?
Can be distorted by small samples
Less sensitive
What is an advantage of the mode?
Not influenced by extreme scores
What is a disadvantage of the mode?
Crude measure of central tendancy
Not useful if many equal values
What is an advantage of the range?
Quick and easy to calculate
What is a disadvantage of the range?
Distorted by extreme values
What is an advantage of standard deviation?
Most sensitive measure - not distorted by extreme values
What is a disadvantage of standard deviation?
A bit more time consuming to calculate
What is nominal data?
The number of times something occurs
What is ordinal data?
Measurements that can be put in order rank or position
What is interval/ration data?
Measurements on a scale the intervalsof which are known and equal
