What is the evidence from Rosenhan that labels are sticky?
11 participants were diagnosed with schizophrenia
1 was diagnosed with manic disorder
There was in fact nothing wrong with any of them and they remained eventhough they behaved normally inside the hospital
What is the evidence from rosenhan for depersonalisation?
Patients within the asylum were given few chances to socialise
They were given drugs but not actually treated
What is the evidence from rosenhan for powerlessness?
Patients were not aloud to initiate conversations with staff
Patients were given no privacy
How is rosenhan useful?
Useful in understanding the flaws in the psychiatric hospitals (highlighted key errors)
How is Rosenhan ethnocentric?
For- all participants were American
Against- Large sample of varying ages and occupations were used
How is Rosenhan ethical?
For- Participants were not deceived (knew what they were volunteering for)
Against- Didn’t have the right to withdraw
How is Rosenhan reductionist?
For- Doctors wouldn’t usually be looking for pseudopatients
Against- Doctors falsely diagnosed genuine patients as pseudopatients
How does Rosenhans study contribute to an understanding of individual social and cultural diversity?
It showed that there was a lack of understanding about mental illness within society regardless of any personal factors.
