Correlation Flashcards
What do correlations refer to?
The strength of the relationship between two variables
What is a positive correlation?
As one variable increases so does the other
What is a negative correlation?
As one variable increases the other decreases
What statistical test is performed when calculating correlation?
Spearmens RHO
What is a correlation coefficient?
A number between -1 and +1 that states how strong a correlation is
What is a spurious relationship?
A mathematical relationship in which two events or variables have no direct causual connection yet it may be wrongly infered that they do
What are some strengths of the correlational method?
Possible to make a prediction about one variable from another
Can be used in potentially unethical research
Can be used as an indicator for more detailed researcher
What are some weknesses of the correlational method?
Cannot just assume cause and effect
The two variables may be linked by a third variable or just be coincidental
What is a correlational hypothesis?
A hypothesis that predicts the correlation between two variables
What is a two tailed hypothesis?
There will be a relationship though it isn’t specified if it will be positive or negative
What is a one tailed hypothesis?
A hypothesis that says the correlation will be one of positive or negative
What is a null hypothesis?
A hypothesis that states there will be no relationship between variables
