Chaney Flashcards
What is operant conditioning?
Learning by consequences. We form a link between the behaviour and its consequences. Depending on consequences the probability of repeating the behaviour increases or decreases
What was the aim of the study?
To see if use of the funhaler increases compliance rates in children with asthma and see if quality of use is improved with the funhaler.
What principle did the funhaler focus on?
Positive reinforcement
Describe the sample used in the study?
32 children aged 1.5 to 6 years
22 male 10 female
All using regular inhaler
Where were they from and how were they recruited?
Recruited from several pediatricians in Perth, Australia
How was data collected?
Participants were first approached at home and were interviewed with a questionaire about the use of their current funhaler
Given the funhaler for two weeks and parents reported progress over the phone
Data reports how easy the device was to use, compliance and treatement attitudes
What experimental design was used?
Repeated measures
What was the aim of the questionaire?
Explore problems with using the medicine, parent and child compliance and parent and child attitudes
What are some examples of questions that appeared in the questionaire?
Did you medicate your child yesterday? yes or no
How many breaths are usually inhaled by your child through the device? <4 >4
Success in medicating the child not always always
Childs attitude towards the device chose all that apply pleasure acceptance no interest suspicion mild fear strong fear panic/phobia
What were the results of the study?
Use of funhaler was assosiated with improved parental and child compliance
How did enjoyment increases from standard device to funhaler device?
Enjoyment rate:
10% standard device
68% Funhaler device
What three aspects went to 0% and what were they orgininally?
Mild fear/dislike 13%
Strong fear/dislike 19%
Panic or phobia 6%
What features of the funhaler are believed to have contributed to its success?
Presence of audible and visual incentive toys
Linkage of toy function to a tidal breathing technique
Ability to incrimentally reward efforts
Use of bright colours to distract attention from medication purposes of device
