How many hospitals were involved?
12 in 5 different states
What did participants claim to be experiancing?
Hearing voices saying empty hollow and thud and were the same gender as the pseudo patient
What were they diagnosed with?
Schizophrenia 11
Manic depression 1
How did they behave inside the hospital?
In a completely normal manner and did not fake any symptoms of abnormality though some showed mild anxiety at first to make themselves more believable
How did they record their observations?
Writen in notebooks - done discreetly at first but then openly when they relaised no one was paying attention to them
How long did they stay in the asylum?
7-52 days
Average 19 days
Was their sanity ever detected?
No
What was an example of normal behaviour being interpreted as abnormal?
Writing - behavioural manifest of disturbance
Eye and verbal contact reflect concern and individuation
How were patients dehumanised?
Not allowed to initiate conversations with staff - beaten if they did
No privacy - no permission required to enter quarters or go through possesions
What did rosenhan believe were the sources of depersonalisation?
Reliance on psychotropic medication making staff believe participants are being treteted and therefore dont require contact
What happened in the second study?
Staff were asked to rate the likelyhood of being a pseudopatient
What were the results?
41/193 were suspected pseudopatients
In fact they were all genuine patients
