Operant conditioning
Approaching phobic object/situation elicits anxiety response
Retreat from phobic object reduces anxiety
Acts as a negative reinforcer
Others may unintentionally reinorce avoidance
What are the three personalities in Freuds theory?
The Psyche- Inate part that obeys pleasure principle
Ego - Logical rational and most concious part of our personality
Superego- Sense of right and wrong and our idealistic versions of ourselves

What the manifest content represents internally
What is flooding?
Going straight to the most anxiety provoking situation
What is systematic desensitisation?
Gradually forcing the phobic object through heirarchy of exposure
What are the steps of exposure therapy?
Step 1- functional analysis. Discover nature and possible triggers of anxiety
Step 2- Relaxation training
Step 3- Anxiety heirarchy
Step 4- gradual exposure
