Grant Flashcards
What is environmental context dependancy effect?
When memory is better when recall takes place in the same environment the information was learned in
What is encoding specificity?
phenomenom of remembering something better when the conditions under which we retrieve information are similar to the conditions under which we encoded it
What was the aim of the Grant et al study?
To determine whether environmental context dependancy effects would be found with the type of material and type of tests typically encountered in schools
What experimental design was used?
Independant studies (each participant took part in one condition)
What was the independant variable?
If test conditions were matching or mismatching
How many participants were in the study and how were they recruited?
8 members of a psychology class recruited 5 aquaintances
39 participants (after one discounted due to anomylous results)
Age 17-56
17 females 23 males
What materials were used in the study?
Cassette player containing background noise from the university cafeteria at lunchtime
Article on psychoimunology deemed interesting and understandable
Test consisting of 10 short answer questions and 16 multiple choice questions
What was the mean recall for the short answer test in each condition?
SS-6.7
SN-5.4
NS-4.6
NN-6.2
What was the mean recall for multiple choice test in each condition?
SS-14.3
SN-12.7
NS-12.7
NN-14.3
What results were found?
Performance was better in matching conditions than mismatching
