Principles and concepts Flashcards
What are the two principles of the cognitive area?
Concerns the investigation of our internal mental processes such as memory thinking and reasoning
Considers the mind as a mechanistic suggesting that we process information like a computer and behaviour is therefore highly predictable
What are the two concepts of the social area?
Other people and the envronment influence our behaviour and though processes
Accepts that cultural norms affect how social processes work
What are the two priciples of the developmental area?
Emphasis on the importance of understanding the changes in behaviour through lifespan
This area assumes that development is an ongoing process and that changes occur over a persons lifetime because of inherited factors and/or lifetime experiences (nature/nurture) and all individuals go through the same stages
What are the principles/concepts of the biological area?
Suggests that all that is psychological is first psysiological as research has suggested the mind is located in the brain all thoughts feelings and behaviours have a physiological cause
Physiological differences exist due in part to genetics and attributes that are hereditary as they are passed on from one generation to another
What are the principles/concepts of individual differences?
Every individual is unique and this uniqueness is displayed through their behaviour so everyone behaves differently
All human characteristics can be measured from one person and quantified. The measures gained from one person are different to those gained from another
What are the principles/concepts of the psychodynamic area?
Assumes that behaviour is caused by unconcious processes and the ongoing conflict of the tripartite personality. Most of our thoughts, feelings and many memories that may threaten us are locked away in our unconcious mind.
The development of personality through the psychosexual stages of development that detail the typical behaviour a child will display at each stage as well as how a fixation at each stage may impact behaviour in later life
What are the principles/concepts of the behaviourist area?
All behaviour is learned through the environment
All behaviour can be objectivity observed and measured
