What was the aim of the study?
To test the effect of culture on childrens moral evaluations of lying and truthtelling
Describe the sample
120 chinese children and 108 canadian children
What are some key differences between Canada and China?
Canada- Industrial, emphasises individualism, allows you to asert yourself, encourages competition
China- collectivist, focus on community over the individual, promotes personal sacrifice for the greater good
Why is lying considered bad in both countries?
Canada- you are breaking a social contract and you are denying another persons rights to the truth
China- It might lead to social disruption and destabalise social harmony

A character would do something good then either lie or tell the truth about it

How did the researchers avoid order effects?
Counter balancing- pro social and anti social were read in a different order for each child

What were the conclusions of pro social/truth telling?
No significant difference in how each culture rated the good deed
Chinese children rated truth telling less positively as age increased
In Chinese children 8% 7 YO 43% 9YO and 48% 11 YO gave negative ratings for truth telling
What are the results of the pro social/lie telling stories?
All canadian children rated lying as negative
Chinese children rated lying more positively as age increased
In chinese children 25% 7 YO 43% 9 YO and 70 % 11 YO rated lying as positive
What conclusions can be drawn from the study?
Generally chinese children rated lying more positively than Canadian children
Generally chinese children rated lying more negatively than Canadian children
