Sports Psychology Flashcards
Whats a open skill?
Open skills are seen in sports such as netball and football, where the situation is always changing. An open skill practice has to match a competitive game situation. Also basketball is a very rapid game that is always changing therefore its a great example of an open skill.
Whats a closed skill?
Closed skills take place in a stable, predictable environment, and the player knows exactly what to do and when. These skills are not affected by the environment. For example; a free throw in basketball, a penalty in football, a serve in squash or tennis.
Whats a basic skill?
A basic skill is one that the player finds easy and needs little concentration to do. This could be a chest pass in netball, or a side foot pass in football.
Whats a complex skill?
A complex skill needs the players complete attention and concentration as it is technically difficult to perform. E.g a penalty in football, or a smash in tennis. These skills need to be practised over and over again, so it becomes easier when playing in a match or competition.
Whats a fixed practice?
Fixed practice is where the skill is practiced over and over again until it is perfected. For example you might fixed practice for a free shot in basketball or a somersault.
Whats a variable practice?
A variable practice involves practicing the skill in a variety of different situations, so that it can be adapted to suit different competitive situations. Variable practice is essential for open skills: for example in football where the game varies from match to match, in different weather conditions.
