Planes and Axis Flashcards
Whats a plane?
Planes divide the human body into sections, there are 3 planes of motion in the body.
Whats a sagittal plane?
The sagittal plane divides the body from top to bottom, (vertically), resulting in a left side and a right side.
Whats a frontal plane?
The frontal plane also divides the body from top to bottom, (vertically), but front and back sections.

Whats the frontal axis?
Imaginary line passing horizontally through the body from left to right, allows rotation.
Whats the vertical axis?
Imaginary line passing vertically through the body, allows rotation of the body in a upright position.
Whats sagittal axis ?
Imaginary line passing horizontally through the body from front to back, allows flexion and extension.
What plane and axis would a gymnast be working when doing a basic sort of somersault?
They would be working in the sagittal plane around the frontal axis.
What plane and axis are used when doing a cartwheel?
