Aerobic And Anaerobic Energy Stores Flashcards
Where is glucose stored?
The muscles and liver store glucose as glycogen. This can be converted back to glucose for the use of exercise.
Whats the formula for respiration?
Glucose + Oxygen = Carbon dioxide + Water + Energy
Whats a waste product in respiration ?
Water and carbon dioxide
How are glucose and oxygen brought to the muscles?
In the blood where respiration takes place and energy is released.
Sport examples of anaerobic exercise?
100m sprint, weight lifting, long jump
Whats the equation for anaerobic exercise?
Glucose = energy + lactic acid
What is anaerobic respiration ?
When your muscles have to work really hard, your muscles need more energy, but your body cannot deliver enough oxygen to them, so anaerobic respiration begins
What is a bi product of anaerobic respiration ?
Lactic acid
Whats glucose?
A major source of energy for most cells in the body.
Whats aerobic respiration?
The process of releasing energy from glucose without oxygen.
Whats aerobic exercise ?
Working at a moderate intensity allowing the body time to utilise oxygen for energy production and to work for a continuous period e.g long distance events.
Whats lactic acid ?
A colourless acid produced in muscle tissues during strenuous exercise when the body is exercising anaerobically at high intensity.
Whats cramp?
Painful, involuntary contraction of a muscle, usually caused by fatigue.
What are complex carbohydrates?
For example star h are found in natural foods such as bananas, brown rice, brown pasta, nuts and potatoes .
What are simple carbohydrates?
Such as glucose and fructose are stored in natural form of fruit and vegetables and in their refined form in biscuits cakes and chocolate.
What will happen if you eat before training or a competition?
It will divert blood away from the muscles you need for performance.
What should you have before a competition or training?
You should have a light meal, high in carbs, at least 2 hours before training or competing.
What are the effects on the heart?
Heart rate increases.
What is stroke volume?
The amount of blood pumped by the heart during each beat. This will increase during physical activity as the muscles will require more blood.
What are the effects on breathing?
When you exercise you need to bring in more oxygen and get rid of carbon dioxide.
