Joints Flashcards
What is a joint?
A joint is when 2 or more bones meet. Joints are important for movement and rotation. All joints allow movement, although the extent of the and freedom of the movement varies from joint to joint.
What are the four types of joints?
Condyloid joints
Ball and socket joints
Hinge joint
Pivot joint
What movements occur at the pivot joint?
The pivot joint allows bones to rotate. In a pivot joint, one bone shaped like a cylinder rotates inside another bone or ligament.
How can a pivot joint aid in sport?
Trying to head a football
Dodging a punch in boxing
Whats a hinge joint?
A hinge joint is a joint that only allows backwards and forwards movement.
What bones are moving when we flex and extend our knee?
The tibia is hinged on the femur so that the leg can be bent or straightened .
Whats the ball and socket joint?
In a ball and socket joint, the rounded head of a long bone (the ball) fits into a cup shaped hole (the socket). Both hip and the shoulder joints are ball and socket joints.
Sporting example of using the ball and socket joint?
When a cricketer throws a ball and rotates their arm.
Whats a condyloid joint?
A condyloid joint is similar to ball and socket joint, but the ball rests against the end of the bone, rather than inside the socket.
An example of a condyloid joint?
The wrist is a condyloid joint. You can bend it (flexion) and straighten it (extension), but you can also turn your hand inwards (adduction) and outwards (abduction).
