Socio-cultural Influences Flashcards
6 factors why participation in sport varies?
Gender Age Socio-economic group Ethnicity Disability Influence of other people
How does gender affect participation in sports?
The idea that some physical activities are made more ‘male’ and others more ‘female’ has mostly disappeared, but some activities still offer one sex more opportunities than the other.
How does age affect participation in sports?
Age can affect performance and may also influence participation in physical activities. In most sports it is good to start young, although some competitive events may have age restrictions e.g the minimum age to take part in the London marathon is 18.
How do socio-economic groups affect participation in sport?
People from a lower socio-economic group may financially struggle to pay for the equipment required to take part. From a higher socio-economic group may play higher end sports such as polo, lacrosse etc.
How does ethnicity affect participation in sports?
Ethnicity refers to a population whose members identify with each other and are united by common, cultural, linguistic or religious traits. It can influence whether we play sport, what we choose to play in.
How does disability affect participation in sport?
People with disabilities take part in many sporting activities. Resources and opportunities for disabled people to take part in sports are increasing. However, more availability is still needed in schools, and at local level, for people with disabilities who are not professional athletes or sportsman.
How does influence of other people affect participation in sport?
Most peoples choice of activity is influenced by others. People tend to choose the same activities as their friends, or members of their families, and are also influenced by sporting figures they admire.
