what is a splint
A
- a strip of rigid material used for holding a broken bone when set.
- secure with a splint or splints

necessary procedure
A
Before you begin the steps, check the scene for safety, check the injured person and call 999 if necessary (Check, Call Care). Steps 1,2,3, are the same for all splints.

How to give anatomic splint
A
- obtain consent
- support the injured body part, above and below site of injury.
- check for feeling warmth and color
- Place several folded triangular bandages above and below the injured body part
- place uninjured body part next to the injured body part
- Tie bandages securely
- Recheck for feeling, warmth, and color.

Applying a sling and binder
A
- obtain consent
- support the injured body part, above and below site of injury.
- check for feeling warmth and color
- Place a triangular bandage under the arm and over the uninjured shoulder to form a sling.
- Tie the ends of the sling a the side of the neck
- Bring the uninjured body part to the chest with a folded bandage
- Recheck for feeling, warmth, and color.

- Place board under the injured body part and the joint that are above and below the injured body part.
- Tie several folded triangular bandages above and below the injured body part
- Recheck for feeling, warmth and color

Applying a soft splint
A
- obtain consent
- support the injured body part, above and below site of injury.
- check for feeling warmth and color
- Place many folded triangular bandages above and below the injured body part.
- Gently, wrap a soft object (blanket/pillow) around the injured area.
- Tie bandages securely with knots
- Recheck for feeling, warmth, and color.

important information
A
- be careful when applying splints/slings because you do not want to worsen the injury or cause more pain for the person.
- splinting helps prevent further injury, reduces pain, and can prevent bleeding and swelling.
- use bandages when applying splints.
- secure bandages tightly in knots but make sure the knots can be untied later on
- Do not use tape!
- If you aren’t able to check for warmth and color because of a sock or shoe in place, check for feeling.
