Describe first degree burn
- The burn is red sore and sensitive to touch:
- go to the doctor immediately if the burn is on your face, hands, feet, genitals, or if it is large area or caused by electrical source.
Second degree burn
- The skin is extremely red and blistered and it hurts a lot!!!
- if a second degree burn is on your face, hands, feet, or genitals, or if it is caused by electricity, if it is large than 2-3 inches, then go and see doctor
Third degree burn
- Skin with third degree burn may appear white or black leathery on surface.
- the burned area may not be painful, but around the area, it is painful
- Pain causes the breathing rate and pulse to increase.
- damage fat, muscle, and bone.
- electricity damages deep tissues, fat muscle, or bone
- only the area of the skin touched by electricity is burned.
- electricity damages stop breathing and interrupt heart rate, cause shock
- If the victim is burned in a fire, or exposed to smoke, there may be chest pain.
- All third degree burns require EMS.
How to care for a burn?
check the scene for safety (turn off power)
Put on gloves if dealing with chemicals
cool the burn
- make the victim comfortable
- pour cold liquid water on the burn for at least 10 min.
- watch for unusual signs like difficult breathing
Remove any constrictions
- put on disposable gloves
- carefully remove clothing or jewellry from area before it starts to swell
- DO NOT remove clothing that has stuck to the burn.
cover burn
- Cover the burn and the sorrounding area with a sterile dressing, clean non-fluffy material, cling film or a plastic bag.
- reassure the victim
Take or send victim to hospital
Call EMS
Treat victim for shock (blood cells die, because of lack of blood supply; necessary only when 3rd degree)
Record vital signs
What is a burn?
- a burn is biochemical damage to your body’s tissues caused by heat, chemicals, electricity, sunlight, or radiation.
- Scalds from hot liquids and steam, building fires and flammable liquids, gases are most common
What do burns cause?
swelling, blistering, scarring, and in serious cases, shock and even death.
lead to infections because they damage the skin (protective barrier).
When do burns require medical care?
- sensitive parts of body,
- greater than 3 inches in diameter
- 3rd degree burns require medical attention
TO treat the burn
cool the burn
cover th burn with a sterile gauze bandage
over the counter pain reliever
watch for signs of infection
REMEMBER!
DO NOT USE ICE
DO NOT APPLY BUTTER OR OINTMENTS TO BURN.
DO NOT BREAK BLISTERS.
FOR ALL BURNS GET A TETANUS SHOT.
