Species Specific bone and joint diseases Flashcards
What bone and joint diseases are commonly associated with canines?
osteochondrosis, hip dysplasia, metaphyseal osteopathy, craniomandibular osteopathy, aseptic necrosis, intervertebral disk disease, neoplasms, and mycotic osteomyelitis
Where does osteochondrosis typically occur in canines?
the shoulder (humeral head), at the ununited anconeal process, or the femoral head (epiphysiolysis)
What happens to the joint in hip dysplasia?
the femoral head is flattened and there is a shallow acetabulum
What does hip dysplasia result in?
chronic osteoarthritis
Where does metaphyseal osteopathy typically occur in canines?
in the distal radius and ulna
What lesions are commonly associated with metaphyseal osteopathy?
fibrinopurulent metaphyseal osteomyelitis, radiolucent metaphyseal area, and periosteal hyperostosis
What is craniomandibular osteopathy?
idiopathic cortical hyperostosis of the mandible
What lesions are commonly associated with asceptic necrosis of the femoral head?
osteonecrosis of the femoral head due to ischemia and cavitation and distorition of the articular surface
What bacteria are associated with mycotic osteomyelitis in canines?
blastomycosis, coccidioidomycosis, and histoplasmosis
What bone diease is commonly associated with felines?
osteochondroma
What bone and joint diseases are commonly associated with equine?
osteochondrosis, angular limb deformities, septic osteomyelitis/arthritis, cervical vertebral canal stenosis, bone sequestra, degenerative joint disease of the lower limb
What is arthrogryposis?
when joints are bent and fixed - usually due to a neuromuscular disability
What horses is septic osteomyelitis/arthritis usually associated with?
foals with failure of placental transfer
What lesions are associated with septic osteomyelitis/arthritis?
fibrinopurulent and necrotizing inflammation
What bacteria are associated with septic osteomyelitis/arthritis in equine?
streptococcus, actinobacillus equuli, and rhodococcus equi
What occurs in static cervical vertebral canal stenosis?
the intervertebral discs come together due to an abnormality in the cervical spine
What occurs in dynamic cervical vertebral canal stenosis?
there is a pinching of the canal when the head is moved in a normal way
What are bone sequestra in equine commonly associated with?
chip fractures on the cortex of cannon bones
What are bone sequestra in equine surrounded by>
focal hyperostosis
What is ringbone?
hyperostosis around the edge of interphalangeal joints
What is spavin?
degenerative disease of the tarsal joint
What is navicular disease?
lysis of navicular bone and inflammation of the navicular bursa
What bone and joint diseases are commonly associated with bovine?
chondrodysplasic dwarfism, actinomycosis, and spondylosis
How do bovine get chondrodysplasic dwarfism?
it is an inherited defect
What issues are associated with chondrodysplastic dwarfism?
large head, short limbs, upper respiratory difficulty
What is actinomycosis in cattle also known as?
lumpy jaw
What causes actinomycosis in cattle?
actinomyces bovis
What lesion is commonly associated with actinmycosis in cattle?
pyogranulomatous osteomyelitis
What is spondylosis?
periarticular osteophytosis of lumbar intervertebral joints
What bone and joint dieases are commonly associated with pigs?
osteochondrosis, nutritional bone diseases, and infectious arthritis/polyserositis
What nutritional bone diseases are commonly associated with pigs?
rickets and lactational osteoporosis
What is lactational osteoporosis caused by?
inadequate dietary calcium and or vitamin D
What infectious arthritis/polyserositis is associated with pre-weaned pigs?
fibrinopurulent arthritis/polyserositis due to streptococcus or e. coli
In post-weaned pigs, what is infectious arthrits/polyserositis often a co-infection with?
PRRS virus or bacteria
What lesions are associated with infectious arthritis/poluserositis in post-weaned pigs?
serofibrinous to fibrinopurulent arthritis/polyserositis due to mycoplasma hyosynovia, m. hyoirhinis, h. parasuis or fibrous to chronic proliferative arthritis due to erysipelothrix rhusiopathia
