Coastal Region (11)
Bamboes Bay, Lamberts Bay, Cape Town, Darling, Franschoek, Paarl, Stellenbosch, Swartland, Tulbagh, Wellington, Lutzville Valley
Cape Town District
- Wards include Constantia, Hout Bay, Durbanville and Philadelphia
- Muscat and Sblanc grow well with Cab S and Shiraz growing further inland
- Land most expensive. Groot and Klein Constantia most famous.
Darling District
- 1 ward Groenekloof. (Green Valley)
- Sblanc and Cinsault are the main grapes.
Franschoek District (French Quarter)
- No Ward!
- Warmer than Stellenbosch, granite Mt and think clay floor
- Old Vine Semillon famous. Char/Cabs
Paarl District (Pearl named after the granite mountains)
- 3 Wards in Paarl: Voor Paardeberg (Before Paardeberg), Simonsberg Paarl (borders Stellenbosch) and Agter Paarl (BehindPaarl)
- Hot and flat
- CB and CabS leading grapes
Stellenbosch District (Stel’s Bush)
- 8 Wards: Simonsberg Stellenbosch, Banghoek, Bottelary, Papeagaiberg, Jonkershoek, Polkadraai, Devon Valley, Vlottenberg
- Simonsberg Stellenbosch – most northern and inland. Rich Bordeaux blend – Kanonkop, Warwick, Rustenberg
- Banghoek (Scary Corner) – southern edge of the Simonsberg mountains – up to 640m with Cabs and Char – okara, Rainbow’s End, Jackson Family
- Bottelary (pantry) – West, CB and Bdx Blends
- Polkadraai faces directly south and Cape Doctor, SB and Syrah
- Jonkershoek and Devon (Deep) Valley are cooler sits with clay soils – Bdx varieties
Swartland (Black Land)
- 8 Wards: 2 Riebeeks (Rivier, Berg), 2 Paardeberg (Paardeberg and
Paardeberg South), 2 P-berg (Porselainberg, Piket-Bo-Berg), St Helena Bay and most importantly Malmesbury - Main grape CB and Cabs
- Malmesbury and Paardeberg – 2 larger area with sandy and granitic soils. Good for Rhone varieties.
Tulbagh
Bowl like terrain trapping heat producing Rhone and Cab S. More quantity than quality.
Wellington
- Formerly part of Paarl but flatter. Bulk production. Mostly heat tolerant varieties from Rhone. CB and Pinotage.
- Biggest vine nursery bank for South Africa is located here.
