Most important region is Swan District GI with its own subregion of Swan Valley GI (very hot);

Margaret River GI
- 6 unofficial subzones: Wilyabrup, Yallingup, Carbunup, Wallcliffe, Karridale, Treeton. Moderated by Leeuwin current.
- The original founding wineries of MR are: Vasse Felix, Moss Wood, Cullen, Leeuwin Estate and Cape Mentelle.
- Cabernet and Chardonnay famous
Great Southern GI
- Sub-region: Denmark and Albany by the coast, Frankland River, Porongurup and Mount Barker
- Riesling & Shiraz dominant

Adelaide Hills GI
- Cool climate area from altitude, Sblanc, Chardonnay and Pinot. Some Shiraz
- 2 subregional GIs: Piccadilly Valley (Chardonnay) and Lenswood (Sblanc)
- Winery: Petaluma and Shaw+Smith
Adelaide Plains GI
Warm
Shiraz is set here. Penfold’s Magill Estate is most famous.
Clare Valley GI
- Most heavily planted region: Riesling, Shiraz, CabS
- Unofficial subregions: Watervale, Polish Hill , Auburn, (which are cooler and more suited for Riesling) Clare and Sevenhill (which are warmer).
- Polish Hill & Watervale contains blue slate and Terra Rossa – Grosset most famous
- Jim Barry – Top red producer of Shiraz and Cabs

- Oldest Shiraz/Grenache/Mataro vines – Categories are: Old (35yrs), Survivor (70yrs), Centenarian (100yrs), Ancestor (125yrs).
– Torbreck for Shiraz - Unoffical subregions: Rosedale, Lyndoch, Williamstown, Rowland Flat, Vine Vale, Stockwell, Northern Barossa, Western Ridge (Greenock, Seppeltsfield), Stonewell and Central Tanunda
Eden Valley GI
- One subregional GI: High Eden
- Henschke’s Hill of Grace was planted in 1860.

Mclaren Vale GI
- Mediterranean climate – Shiraz, Cabs, Grenache – D’Arenberg Dead Arm Shiraz
- Scarce Earth is the project to recognize single sites within Mclaren Vale
Langhorne Creek GI
Second largest GI after McLaren. Home to Jacob’s creek and Wolf Blass.
Limestone Coast (6 regions)
Coonawarra, Padthaway, Benson, Mount Gambier, Wratonbully, Robe
Coonawarra
- Famous for Terra Rossa soils. Iron Oxide over Limestone.
Predominantly Cabernet S followed by Shiraz, Chardonnay and Merlot. - Wynns now owns more than 50% of Coonawarra vineyards.
Padthaway GI
Heavily cultivated region with 4000ha of vines. Big houses like Lindemans,
Hardy’s, Wynn’s and Orlando wines are there. 1/3 is Shiraz.
Lower Murray
1GI: The largest single producing GI in Aussie : Riverland GI. Value producers like Oxford Landing and Banrock Station are here.

Grampians GI
- One subregion: Great Western GI
- Grapes are Shiraz and Cab S but Best’s Cellars has the oldest Pinot Meunier planted in 1868.
Central Victoria
Bendigo, Heathcote, Goulburn, Strathboogie Ranges, Upper Goulburn
Bendigo GI and Heathcote GI
Both are Shiraz and Cabernet dominant.
Jasper Hill most famous from Heathcote.
Goulburn Valley GI
- Famous for Tahbilk Winery and their old ungrafted Shiraz (1860) and Marsanne (1927).
- One subregional GI: Nagambie Lakes GI for Shiraz, Cab S and Chardonnay
North East Victoria
Glenrowan, King Valley, Alpine Valley, Rutherglen, Beechworth
Rutherglen Valley GI
- Famous for its Fortified sticky wines called Muscat and Topaque, formerly known as Tokay.
- Predominantly Brown Muscat (Muscat a petit rouge), Shiraz and Durif.
- Soils are unique with Rutherglen loam for fortified styles and Black Dog sandy loam
- Producers left include: Morris, Campbell’s, Chambers, All Saints, Pfeiffer, Stanton & Killeen, Rutherglen Estates, Buller
- Muscat of Rutherglen Classification
Glenrowan GI
- Makes fortified wine from Muscat a petit Grains like Rutherglen
- also plant Shiraz and Durif
Beechworth GI
Cool climate style Shiraz and Chardonnay. Giaconda is most famous.
Port Phillip
Geelong, Sunbury, Macedon Ranges, Mornington Peninsula & Yarra Valley
Yarra Valley GI
- Important wine region for PN/Char
- Famous producers include Yarra Yering, Mount Mary, Coldstream Hills and Domaine Chandon.
Mornington Peninsula GI
- Cooler than Yarra, with PN/Char planted
- famous producers: Paringa Estate, Moorooduc, Kooyong Estate.
Geelong GI
- Driest in Port Phillip, with PN, Shiraz, Char
- Made famous by By Farr
Gippsland GI
- Pinot Noir, Shiraz, Cab S, Chardonnay and Sblanc
- 3 Unofficial Subregions. South, East and West Gippsland. But cant get classification due to size
- Bass Phillip most famous.
Tasmania
7 unofficial subregions. North: Pipers River, Tamar Valley and North West Coast
South: East Coast, Coal River, Derwent Valley and Huon Valley
Jansz – owned by Yalumba, founded in the early 1980s as a joint venture between Louis Roederer and Heemskerk Wines, oldest sparlking wine producer

- The hottest and wettest region in Australia. Whites more successful, Semillon is king with Shiraz..
- 3 Subregions: Upper Hunter Valley (inland), Pokolbin and Broke Fordwich
Central Ranges (3 regions)
Mudgee
- Drier than Hunter and less prone to wet weather.
- Cabernet, Merlot and Shiraz but strong in Chardonnay.

- Southern Highlands GI – most planted is tempranillo, Shiraz, Chardonnay
- Shoalhaven Coast GI – plant Chambourcin, like Hasting River GI
Queensland (2 regions)
- Granite Belt GI is high altitude (700m) and produces the best quality Shiraz in Queensland.
- South Burnett GI is Australia’s Northernmost GI. Verdelho seems to be the potential grape.
