Chilean Grape
Pipeno, Chica and Chacoli
Chacoli is made from Chicha allowed to ferment longer at a cold temperature. In some ways Chicha and fizzy Chacoli are a type of “Pet-Nat,” which are becoming more popular these days.
Chacoli
- Txakolin in Basque (or Chacoli in Spanish) is a traditional spritzy, high acid, low alcohol white wine from northeastern Spain in Basque country
- In comparison to Spanish Chacoli, Chilean Chacoli historically used riper grapes, fermented in tinajas (clay amphora) and was made with Pais, Moscatel and Torontel. Today Chilean Chacoli can be found as a white, rosé, or red from many different varietals. Some are well-known like Pinot Noir and Bordeaux varietals.
Atacama Region
2 subregions:
* Valle de Copiapo DO
* Valle de Huasco DO
Valle de Copiapo DO
- Mainly Pisco production with Moscatel(Muscat of Alexandria), Torentel (Torrontés) and Pedro Ximenez
- Camanchaca fog – provide water and shade
Valle de Huasco DO
- Char, SB, Syrah in calcareous soils in Coastal Huasco
- Upper Huasco produces Pajarete (Sun Wine) a protected DO wine made from Muscat varietal blends.
Pajarete Wines
- In Chile, Pajarete, also known as “sun wine”, is an origin-protected sweet wine from the Atacama and Coquimbo areas.
- Muscat Varietals used – Moscatel de Austria, Moscatel Rosado, Muscat de Alexandria (main ones)
Coquimbo Region (3 subregions)
Elqui DO, Limari DO, Choapa DO
Elqui Valley DO
- Major town and Coastal DO region of La Serena producing SB, PN, and PX.
- The Andes DO areas of Paihuano and Vicuna (main commercial town) grow Syrah.
Limari Valley DO
- Major town and Coastal Area DO of Ovalle producing Char and SB.
- Known as the Green North.
- Entre Cordilleras Area: Punitaqui / Andes Area: Monte Patria, Rio Hurtado
Choapa Valley DO
- Located on the rocky, chalky slopes of the Andes. Syrah and Cabernet are the main grapes.
- The main town in Illapel which is also an Andes Area DO with Salamanca.
Aconcagua Region (3 subregions)
Valle de Aconcagua, Valle de Casablanca, Valle de San Antonio
Valle del Aconcagua DO
- Named after the highest mountain in the area at 6.9k metres, 1st planted by by Don Maximiano Errazzuriz
- Mainly red grapes – CabS, Syrah, Carmenere grown on sand
- Most famous DO area is Panequehue where Errazzuriz is located
Valle de Casablanca DO
- Strong influence from the Humboldt current creating morning fog and strong cloud cover.
- Whites are the main with Chardonnay and Sblanc. Pinot is next. On Sandy Clay.
Valle de San Antonio DO
- Coastal region named after the town of San Antonio. Similar to Casablanca valley but with more granite and clay soils.
- 2 major DOs located within: Leyda DO and Lo Abarca DO.
- Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are the main grapes with Sblanc.
- Lo Abarca DO is home to Casa Marin (most famous winery in the valley)
Valle Central Region (4 subregions)
Valle de Maipo, Valle de Rapel, Valle de Curico, Valle de Maule
Valle del Maipo DO
- Closest region to Santiago with 3 general areas: Alto Maipo, Central Maipo, and Maipo Bajo.
- Alto Maipo – around edges of Andes, best plantings of CabS, Merlot, Syrah – Important DO areas are: Santiago, Pirque & Puente Alto (highest in Maipo – Almaviva, Don Melchor)
- Central Maipo – DO area of Buin
- Maipo Bajo cheap stuff
Valle de Rapel DO
2 subregions:
* Cachapoal in the North
* Colchagua in the South
Cachapoal
- Closer to Andes, better for reds like Carmenere, Cabs, Syrah, Merlot
- Famous DO: Peumo & Rancagua
- Famous winery: Carmins del Peumo
Colchagua
- Closer to Pacific, planting at high altitude are the best
- DO areas of San Fernando & Chimbarongo
- Clos Apalta, Purple Angel, Montes “M” are found here in the Apalta Valley
Valle de Curico DO
- Respected bulk wine area. Two region here with Teno valley in the North and Lontue in the South. Miguel Torres first planted here and brought in modern techniques in 1979.
- Teno river bring water from Andes. Closer to Andes are Cabs, Carmenere, SB, Char. Important DO is Licanten
- Lontue is Mediterranean with CabS and Sblanc. DO areas are Sagrada Familia and Molina in the Andes
Valle de Maule DO
- Used to be oldest bulk production of Pais grape, now home to old Carignan, CabS and Carmenere.
- 3 subregions located in Maule: Valle del Claro, Valle del Loncomilla, Valle del Tutuvén.
- Major DO areas include the cities of Talca, Linares (Entre Cordilleras) and Colbún (Andes)
South Region (3 subregions)
3 subregions: Valle del Itata, Valle del Bio Bio, Valle del Malleco
Valle del Itata DO
- Largest area in the South Region. Wet and foggy.
- Major grapes are Moscatel de Alejandra, Pais, Cinsault and CabS
Valle del Bio Bio DO
- Coolest foggiest regions in Chile with the main city of Los Ángeles.
- Major grapes are PN, Pais, Char, Sblanc
Valle del Malleco DO
- Southernmost in the South Region.
- Major grapes are PN, Pais ,Char, Sblanc
Austra Region (2 subregions)
- Valle del Cautin, Valle de Osorno
- Grapes include: PN, Riesling, Sblanc, Char
Nubile Region (3 subregions)
