Large area however – different microclimates. East and South are more whites whereas North and Northwest are more red xinclined
Kamptal, Kremstal and Traisental DAC
- All 3 DAC for Gruner and Riesling
- Kamptal and Kremstal have ÖTW (Österreichische Traditionsweingüter) where they follow a tier system of Gebetswein (Regional) Wine, Ortswein (Village) and Riedenwein (Single Vineyard)
- Popular Kremstal Rieds are Pffafenberg (Priest Hill), Hund and Kögl (known for mica slate soils called glimmerschiefer)
- Popular Kampatal Rieds are Heiligenstein (Hell Stone), Gaisberg, Loiserberg and Lämm(Lamb)
- Traisental popular for heurigen – local pubs serving fresh young wines, easy to drink from nearby growers
Wachau DAC
- DAC for Gruner Veltliner and Riesling at the Riedenwein level
- Steinfeder <= 11.5% abv, 15 KMW
- Federspiel 11.5% - 12.5% abv, 17 KMW
- Smaragd >=12.5% abv, 19 KMW
- Famous Rieden include Achleiten, Hochrain (high Rain)
Wagram DAC
DAC for Gruner Veltliner, Riesling and Roter (Red) Veltliner at the Riedenwein level
Carnuntum DAC
- Only region in Lower Austria where red grapes lead. Significantly warmer.
- DAC for Zweigelt and Blaufrankisch. Whites are Gruner, Chardonnay and Weissburgunder(Pinot Blanc)
Wiener Gemischter Satz DAC
- multi-variety blends in the Vienna region, Gruner, Chard, Neuberger, Riesling, Pinot, Traminer etc. >20
- Requires a minimum of 3 wines each not exceeding 50% and not less than 10% if three varieties are used
Thermenregion DAC (2023)
- White wine is prominent in the north – Anniger
Hill slopes for whites Rotgipfler and Zierfandler (Spatrot). - Southern Thermenregion is a bit flatter and more gravelly, more suited to Pinot Noir and St Laurent
