What is an unprotected exposure?
Tissue under the skin (where skin becomes broken ie. a bite)
Body fluid in contact with non-intact skin (Cut, chapped, abraded skin)
Body fluid in contact with mucous membrane (Eyes, nose, mouth, lungs)
What is a significant exposure?
Any unprotected exposure with an agent that may cause illness or disease
What are some examples of high risk sources?
IV drug/alcohol abuser Homeless population Recent international travel Sex worker Current or recent imprisonment Infants born to HIV infected women Recent exposures to HIV,hepatitis, TB, coronavirus or any contagious respiratory illness Had blood transfusion, blood product, organ transplant between 1978 and 1985
What are all personnel supposed to do if a possible unprotected exposure occurs?
Report their immediate supervisor Seek immediate medical care Complete a WIIR
What does the immediate supervisor do if personnel report a possible unprotected exposure?
Notify on-duty designated officer
If personnel need medical care due to a possible unprotected exposure who will coordinate transportation of affect personnel?
The district/division chief
What does DNRC stand for?
Do Not Resuscitate Confirmation
What must be completed for a DNRC to be valid?
Patients name
Signature by physician or nurse The date the form was signed
Unique serial number
Conditions met; tick box checked
What type of care can personnel provide if a patient has a valid DNRC?
Interventions or therapies to provide comfort or alleviate pain
What must the captain do with a DNRC upon return to station?
Fully document the event in the MAR remarks section
Document the serial number of the DRNC
