SOGs-28-Other Emergencies Flashcards
What should be done upon arrival on scene had a carbon monoxide detector activation?
Determine if rescue or removal of any occupants is required
Notify paramedics if required
Personnel will initiate emergency patient care until EMS is on scene
If department detector activates into alarm personnel well done there SCBAs
If CO is present at a carbon monoxide detector activation what steps should take place?
Consider ventilating the structure
Attempt to determine source of CO
Request Enbridge gas attend
Consider neighbouring and/or attached structures for possible extension of CO and/or possible sources
What are some possible sources of CO?
Car running an attached garage
Operating BBQ in enclosed area
Gas or wood-burning fireplace
Blocked chimney opening
Portable heater
Improperly installed range or cook top vent
Cracked heater exchange in furnace
Leaking chimney pipe or flue
What steps should be taken if CO is not present at a carbon monoxide detector activation
Examine occupants detector for indication of false activation
Advise occupants of possible causes and provide direction on possibly obtaining a new detector
What are some possible explanations for an occupancy detector activating and department equipment not?
Home detector is operating normally and has accumulated CO over a period of time
Area has been ventilated since the time of the exposure. Altair detector may not encounter any CO
False alarm due to the cross sensitivity of other chemicals. consider a hazmat response to investigate other chemical sources
What should be considered when removing occupants from the structure due to a CO detector activation?
The weather conditions
What is the role of BFES at a natural gas emergency?
Take all reasonable steps to protect personnel and the public from the hazards associated with escaping gas.
What should be the placement of the first apparatus and all additional apparatus at a natural gas emergency?
First apparatus should be parked up wind
Additional apparatus are to be staged a minimum of 100 m away
What steps should personnel take at a natural gas emergency?
Confirm they are dealing with natural gas
Maintain communication
Use appropriate PPE
Isolate/evacuate/protect in place any persons in immediate danger
Endeavour to eliminate open sources of ignition
Consider using outside shut off valve
Ensure escaping gas does not enter any other buildings, sewers or vaults
Use the 4 gas detector to determine the concentrations of natural gas and evacuation parameters
Work in coordination with gas company
Ventilation should be done naturally
What shall personnel not do at a natural gas emergency?
Pressurize an area suspected of being contaminated
Re-opening closed shut off valve without authorization from gas company
Attempt to extinguish a natural gas fire unless there is an immediate threat to life for property
Entering excavations to control gas leak
Attempting to stop a natural gas leak on a plastic pipe
Introduce water on to a natural gas emergency
Fill any excavations
