What should drivers consider or be aware of at an incident?
Personnel or spectators stepping in front of a moving apparatus Utilize pylons

What should apparatus drivers do when backing a vehicle?
Use personnel as spotters
Activate emergency lights
Walk around apparatus if spotters are unavailable
Use 2 spotters if available
Make verbal communication with spotter
Ensure spotter 8 to 10 feet behind vehicle
What are the responsibilities of personnel/spotters with the backing of a vehicle?
Have a thorough knowledge of hand signals
Do not stand between a vehicle and other object
Survey the right side, rear area and overhead clearance for obstacles
Keep eye contact with the driver
Direct the driver with approved hand signals or verbal communication
Allow extra room for swing factor
Do not back apparatus close to stationary objects
When backing into a station how far from the bay door for the driver stop?
3 metres
When backing into a station why does the vehicle need to stop away from the bay door?
The spotter needs to ensure personnel with the exhaust extractor are clear of the incoming apparatus
What is the proper sequence for shutting down an apparatus?
All lights and accessories are off Ensure air tanks are fully charged Shut down engine
Turn battery off
Connect to station power
What if there is a conflict between a shift driving instructor and the driver?
Another shift examiner will evaluate the driver
Define safe working zone?
An area determined by the IC were rescue extrication or firefighting activities may take place
What is a blocker vehicle?
Apparatus placed 30m or 4m/10km of posted speed limit to protect personnel working in a safe working zone
What are the requirements for a blocker vehicle?
6800 kg of mass
Rear mounted arrow board
What is a fend off position?
Apparatus positioned in such a way as to help deflect an approaching vehicle from entering the safe working zone
What is the HVSA?
High Visibility Safety Apparel
What is the Ontario traffic management?
Temporary traffic control for unplanned events
What is a lateral buffer?
Area created along side an incident scene to provide added protection
What distance should a wide lateral buffer be?
0.5 metres
