When is an investigation to begin for a fire investigation?
As early in the incident as possible provided safety considerations have been addressed
What factors does the IC need to determine are safe for an investigator to enter the scene and commence caused determination?
Air quality
Environment hazards
Structural integrity
All other hazards which might jeopardize their safety have been identified and addressed
Who will be assigned to assist the investigator during nights weekends and holidays?
A crew will be assigned with the crew captain acting as the I C until the investigation is complete
During normal business hours on weekdays who will respond to assume command while an investigator is still on scene?
An assistant division chief of fire prevention and they will liaise with the on-duty DC to determine if a fire crew should remain on scene for safety
What is the IC responsible for after a post fire investigation?
Ensure that the structure is secure to guard against unlawful entry
What will be recorded in fire reporting as per the OFM occurrence reporting system?

What needs to be done when a fire loss exceeds $100,000?
The platoon chief will generate a report and forward it to the on duty Chief and on call fire prevention officer
If heavy equipment is required for a fire investigation and the owner/insurance contact is known and attends the scene what needs to be done?
Identify the equipment and or resources on scene
Contact the owner or owners representative and request the required equipment be brought to the scene
Request PRP to remain on scene
Contact the C.O.B building inspections division
Knockdown standing unsecured parts of structure
Extinguish the fire
Use required equipment to sift through the debris to ensure no casualties are in or under
Initiate a cause and origin scene examination
If heavy equipment is required for a fire investigation and the owner/agent is absent what needs to be done?
Notify on duty chief to arrange for demolition when city resources are to be used
Identify equipment and/or resources on scene
Contact the COB building inspections division
Request PRP to remain on scene
Contact city works department during normal business hours or ask for the on-duty foreman outside of business hours

All cases involving a personal injury or fatality
Who needs to be contacted if the CBO is unavailable?
The Deputy CBO
What is a building emergency?
Any situation which poses an immediate danger to the health or safety of any person in the normal use of the building, persons outside of the building or persons whose access to building has not been reasonably prevented
What are some examples of a building emergency?
Structural or potential structural damage resulting from fire vehicle impact or weather
Structural failure from undetermined cause
Unsafe private sewage system
Illegal occupancy of new buildings incomplete and or uninspected/approved plumbing fire protection or life safety systems
