Pharm and Actions
An alkalotic solution which neutralizes acids found in the body; Acidosis depresses contractility, and the cardiac response to catacholamine and makes the heart more likely to fibrillate
Indications
To reverse acidosis found during cardiac arrest or near-drowning victims; Make the heart more receptive to conversion from VF, asystole, PEA by normalizing the PH; For alkalinization of urine in certain poisonings and overdoses
Contraindications
None noted
Administration
Adult/Ped- 1 mEq/kg initially, followed by 0.5 mEq/kg every 10 minutes
Side Effects and Special Notes
Should not be given with a catacholomine or calcium; May increase cerebral acidosis, especially in diabetics who are ketotic; Metabolic alkalosis which is impossible to reverse; Not for respiratory arrest w/ a pulse, only for cardiac arrest
