Pharm and Action
Vasodilator; Decreases peripheral resistance; Generalized smooth muscle relaxation; Reduces venous tone
Indications
Pain thought to be coronary ischemia; Angina; Control of hypertension in angina or acute MI; Pulmonary edema
Contraindications
Hypotension; Hypovalemia; ICP; Aortic stenosis; Severe bradycardia or tachycardia; Use of ED drugs in 24 hours
Administration
0.4 mg SL; Dose may be doubled if patient uses NTG chronically; Repeat every 3-5 minutes up to 3 times
Side effects and Special Notes
Headache, flushing, dizziness, burning under the tongue; Hypotension, have IV established beforehand; Reflex tachycardia/bradycardia; Syncope; May be effective in relieving chest pain due to esophageal spasm; Therapeutic effect is enhances but adverse effects are increased when patient is upright
