Sociological Schools of Thought at TDSS Flashcards
Structural Functionalism
- Society is stable when social institutions meet the needs of its citizens.
- These institutions of structures of sociology of a society are interdependent and work together to meet the needs of the individuals.
- Structural functionalists study how these structures work together to help a society function.
Structural Functionalism TDSS
TDSS provides a vast range of different things for the students to take advantage of, for example we have a Mac lab for tech and design courses and the school provides chromebooks for those who cannot afford their own 1 to 1 device.
Conflict Theory
- Conflict theory studies competition between different groups for power.
- This competition is a result of the constant struggle between those who have economic and political power and those who do not.
- The conflict theory is based on the work of Karl Marx. Marxist understanding of society focused on conflict within the economic systems between two distinct classes, the wealthy and the poor class of workers. The imbalance between these two groups is an example of constant conflict in society.
Conflict Theory TDSS
In a school setting conflict theory can be applied to the different grades, as the older grades generally want to seem more powerful and important while the younger grades strive to seem equal and gain the respect of the upper class.
Feminist Sociology
- Feminist sociologists examine gender inequality.
- In the twentieth century, female sociologists expanded their study on how men controlled women’s lives, their jobs, their finances, and their bodies. They concluded that women were marginalized, deprived of power, and without equal membership in society.
Feminist Sociology TDSS
Minimal conflict between genders; it seems that there is little to no gender inequality in our school.
Symbolic Interaction
- Symbolic interaction studies human interaction at the micro level.
- This approach emphasizes the individual living within a larger society.
- According to this theory, the individual is at the center of understanding society, since social values and roles are formed by individual interpretation. An individual creates a sense of self by the reactions of others.
Symbolic Interaction TDSS
Each student in our school is very unique and acts differently for a number of factors, like the influence of the people around them, and this person helps shape the culture of the school on a micro scale.
