Socialization
- The process by which an individual acquires self identity, and the social skills for survival.
- Includes physical, mental and social skills to survive in our culture.
- Takes place throughout our lifetime.

Primary Socialization
an individual learns the basic norms and values of society during childhood
examples of Primary Socialization
- The difference between right and wrong
- Manners
- Respectful behaviour
- Often taught by parents/primary
- caregivers/family
Secondary Socialization
Other institutions/agents that socialize an individual outside of their families are referred to as secondary forms of socialization.

- Religious centres/groups
- Workplace
- The media
Anticipatory Socialization
Using your knowledge of socialization to anticipate what behaviour might be required in a given situation/amongst a certain group.
exmaples of Anticipatory Socialization
- Shake hands
- Come prepared
- Printed resume, list of questions you may have
- Dress to impress
- Speak professionally (no swearing)
- Articulate yourself and speak with confidence/clarity
Resocialization
The process by which an individual adopts new values, attitudes and behaviours that foster their transition from one role/behaviour to another.
examples of resocilization
- A little boy is used to hitting to get what he wants. His teacher teaches him that using his words will help him get what he wants.
- A person is moving from Iran to Canada and must adopt the new social roles/expectations
Agents of Socialization
People or institutions that guide or influence a child’s social development.
